Numerical modelling of the migration direction of tidal sand waves over sand banks

نویسندگان

چکیده

Tidal sand waves are large-scale bed forms found in shallow sandy seas, which show a migration of several meters per year. Field data from the Dutch part North Sea revealed pattern causing bidirectional over bank, resulting wave uphill both sides bank. In order to understand physical mechanisms behind this behaviour, we study inclusion bank under field using numerical model Delft3D. First, schematized set-up (i.e. bathymetry and simple tidal forcing) showed that alteration flow by resulted tide-averaged horizontal towards top Second, case was performed more complex used (bathymetry forcing identical site where an offshore wind farm is developed). Here, results directions comparable observations. The open opportunities explore modelling patterns fields for development areas with bathymetric environments.

Modelling offshore sand waves

Offshore activities often encounter large scale sand patterns, such as sand waves. Sand waves are offshore bed forms occurring at water depths of 10 to 50 m. Their wavelengths can lead up to 500 m and their heights are typically several metres. Furthermore, sand waves have been shown to migrate, with typical velocities of up to metres per year. These dynamic sand waves decrease the least naviga...

The morphodynamics of tidal sand waves: A model overview

This paper reviews recent theoretical studies of sand waves which are rhythmic large-scale bedforms observed in the continental shelf far from the near-shore region. Emphasis is given to the investigations carried out in the framework of the EU research project HUMOR. First, the results of linear morphodynamic stability analyses are described, which allow to understand the initial behavior of t...

The effect of slopes on sand transport - numerical modelling

Most aeolian sediment transport models and experiments have been conducted on flat horizontal surfaces. Very little numerical or analytical research has been carried out for aeolian sand transport on slopes. The current work presents numerical modelling of saltating sand for a climbing dune which has a slope angle of 20”. The model utilised wind fields predicted from the FAA complex terrain mod...

Simulating offshore sand waves

Sand waves form a prominent regular pattern in the offshore seabeds of sandy shallow seas and pose a threat to a range of offshore activities. A two-dimensional vertical (2DV) flow and morphological simulation model describing the behaviour of these sand waves has been developed. The simulation model contains the 2DV shallow water equations, with a free water surface and a general bed load form...
